A second mechanism for ankle injury is illustrated on this page. In this
instance, the foot is everted, then a force is applied on the medial
aspect of the ankle. The resulting effect is to twist the talus
outward, placing increasing stress on the front-most elements of the
deltoid ligament. As the applied force increases, the twisting
of the talus forces the mortise formed by the distal tibia and fibula
to open, straining the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament
on the opposite side.
