 If the foot is adducted then forcibly everted, the events illustrated here may occur. This maneuver focuses stresses on the forward components of the deltoid ligament and the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, providing yet another mechanism for developing and ankle "sprain". Note that in the instance of severe injury, rupture of both ligaments AND fracture of the fibula have occurred.
